The Grates are two girls and a boy: John plays guitar, Alan thumps away at her kit, Patience sings, squeals, yelps and yells. None of them every really aspired to be in a proper band, but they all enjoyed performing from a young age and met during after school theatre classes at Brisbane High School (in Australia). Theirs is the classic drama geek backstory: while the other kids were outside doing something sporty, this threesome bonded indoors over their love of things a little more tweeunderground music, off--off Broadway theatre and outlandish animal drawings. Then came the duet. One night at a local bar, John and Patience picked up microphones and discovered, well, a whole new world. -TheBooth-
