Bizarre

Mandi Perkins
Rock / Pop / Alternative
Los Angeles, California, United States
WEB
MySpace
Info en su MySpace:
Mandi Perkins is a real and emotional singer/songwriter who creates uncompromising melodic rock. Her music makes listeners care, think, and question. Born and raised in Toronto, Canada, Mandi grew up surrounded by music and she began writing songs and performing on stage when she was just a small child. It was at this time in her life that Mandi also became fascinated by musical theatre and she performed in a variety of plays including: Annie, Les Miserables, and The Wizard of Oz. At the age of sixteen, she was chosen to perform the National Anthem at the Skydome in Toronto. One year later, Mandi placed first in a nationwide singing competition.
Mandi's ambitions inspired a move to California to pursue both her music career and to obtain a university degree. She attended UC Berkeley where she graduated with honors in English Literature. Her extensive studies enabled her to improve her songwriting skills. Mandi focused on words in many different contexts and she saw how each separate grouping of letters shaped the communications of the world. She began applying this knowledge to her lyrics in order to honestly express her thoughts.
Immediately following graduation, Mandi made a move to Los Angeles in order to fully dedicate herself to music. Mandi consistently delights packed audiences with her enthusiastic performances and her captivating voice. Mandi describes her music as being, "intense and melodic... the vocals and lyrics are rich with intensity and they float on passionate guitar textures and vibrant pulsating drums." Each of Mandi's songs stems from her own personal experiences and the lives of the people close to her. One of the most noticeable aspects of Mandi's music is that there is deep emotion combined with hauntingly edgy musical sequences and harmonies. "I write songs from my stomach," she says. "I will take an event that has happened to me immediately following its conclusion and I will stretch it out until its at the rawest form. Once I have the emotion explode on paper, I am much more at ease. Songwriting is cathartic for me. I think its great to passionately feel, but there is a point when you should make sure you have an outlet, especially when the excess baggage takes control of your life. Hopefully listening to my music will be cathartic for other people." Mandi has sold over 5,000 CD's and digital downloads of her EP and is endorsed by A&R WorldWide.
"Mandi Perkins is undoubtedly one of the freshest, most prolific songwriters to hit the U.S. from our North American neighbor. Consistently delighting audiences with her enthusiastic performances, her "take no prisoners" attitude, and her contagious melodic rock, Perkins is set for fame." -- BMI

James o'toole is a well known dublin street musician who has decided to start working on getting his numerous original songs out to other musicians and the public.... james was born in dublin's fatima mansions flats complex (which, for those of you not from ireland,is a pretty grim place to live) and grew up there and in crumlin....james has been writing songs for many years and has taught himself to play numerous instruments (everything except drums on the above tracks was performed by james).... " music has been and will always be my rope if i ever feel like i'm going under, i feel like i've built up so much anger and fire in my belly because of the state of the world, maybe because of where i grew up, but music is the soothing balm, it's my release valve, it stops me from exploding!...in the last year i've really felt that i've been discovering my voice gaining the range i needed to express myself completely..."

Componentes:

When At the Drive-In called it quits just before becoming massive, it seemed like they had blown a one-shot opportunity. Not so. While vocalist Cedric Bixler and guitarist Omar Rodriguez went off and formed the self-consciously weird Mars Volta, the Afro-free faction of ATDI--guitarist Jim Ward, bassist Paul Hinojos, and drummer Tony Hajjar--handily carried on under the new guise of Sparta. This quick-to-the-point EP, produced by Jerry Finn (Green Day, Blink 182), features the familiar sound of clipped rhythms, oblique vocals, and fuzzed-out guitars, but it also sounds insidiously fresh. Tracks like "Mye" and "Vacant Skies" update ATDI's taut fury with a most agreeable luster, while the pure force of the music remains respectfully undiminished. --Aidin Vaziri

Info recogida en su MySpace:
Colour Revolts name is derived from Edwin Abbotts 19th century social commentary, Flatland, an exploration of life in two dimensions. But Colour Revolt is far from two-dimensional, eschewing Fletchers familiar sonic assault of unorthodox song structures and time signatures for a more melancholic though equally guitar-driven aesthetic of the post-grunge Southern gothic.
The bands thematic impulse reflects the literary heritage of their native Oxford, Miss., channeling the jagged emotionality and moral ambiguity of the locales forefathers, William Faulkner and Barry Hannah. Another facet of the small university town is music, serving as the home to the neo-blues pioneering of Fat Possum Records and in-demand Sweet Tea Recording studio.
But it was outside any proper studio that the songs on the Colour Revolt EP took form. Scheduled to record in a friends basement in Jackson, Miss. in late August 2005, Hurricane Katrina struck the same weekend, pushing storm evacuees into the recording space. With nowhere to record in a city lacking electricity, the band set up shop with a ProTools rig in the living room of the owner of Esperanza Plantation, a small local record label, also home to the band. Forced into a DIY approach, the band used a pair of pantyhose as a windscreen and built a vocal booth out of spare cardboard boxes and leftover brooms.
After several weekends of tracking in between the bands full-time gig as college students, several of the songs caught the attention of Clay Jones, a Sweet Tea engineer who has mixed Elvis Costello and Modest Mouse albums. Jones lent post-production help and mixed the entirety of the EP. Esperanza Plantation provided a small-scale release for the EP in December 2005.
Produced by former bass player Steven Bevilaqua, the Colour Revolt EP reflects a young band that thinks old. The songs emanate a spiritual and existential urgency, which is only accentuated by singer Jesse Coppenbargers vocal thrust, ranging from fragile whispers to guttural screams back to pointy falsetto. The bands three-guitar approach provides an offsetting soundscape, where intricate guitar interplay meets understated harmonies.
On October 3, the Colour Revolt EP will be re-released by Tiny Evil (Nine Black Alps, Jimmy Eat World), an imprint of Interscope Records.

Jeremy Enigk
Seattle, Washington
MySpace
web
Info en el blog de su MySpace:
The last time Jeremy Enigk, the singer and songwriter for emocore pioneers Sunny Day Real Estate and The Fire Theft, released a solo album, Hilary was testifying about Whitewater, Dolly was being cloned, and the Ramones were about to play their last gig.
It’s been awhile.
That album, 1996’s Return of the Frog Queen earned Enigk raves from critics and fans alike for its lush pop orchestration and enigmatic lyrics. Since then, he’s put out three more discs with Sunny Day, plus The Fire Theft’s debut. But now he’s back with World Waits to pick up where he left off a decade ago. And he starts, appropriately enough, with a triumphant track called “A New Beginning.”
“I realized that starting off the record with such a bombastic thing had a tie-in to 'Return of the Frog Queen,’” Enigk says, “as if it were taking off where ‘Frog Queen’ left off.”
Of course, no one who has followed Enigk’s roller coaster career — band break-ups, band reunions, a controversial conversion to Christianity in the mid-‘90s — would expect him to be the same person he was 10 years ago. And he’s not.
“I’ve grown and changed, mainly spiritually,” he says. “I think I’ve become a lot more accepting of things I wasn’t back then. Through experiences, I’ve opened up a little bit. You just grow up.”
Enigk assembled the songs on World Waits over the course of the past decade. Among the 10 cuts are two that were slated for a follow up to ROTFQ that was interrupted by Sunny Day Real Estate activity, others that Enigk originally intended for The Fire Theft, and still others written as recently as six months ago.
He calls the ruminative title track his “love song to the world.”
“There are simple solutions to simple problems,” he said. “People are starving — feed ‘em. As an American especially, it’s so easy for me to put on blinders and live in TV land. That frustrates me, that laziness to take responsibility.”
If World Waits has more rock and less chamber texture than its predecessor, they both share a timelessness in sound that has roots in Enigk’s lifelong love for The Beatles, The Who and vintage U2.
Enigk co-produced World Waits with Josh Myers, who has arranged strings for artists ranging from indie songwriter Rosie Thomas to pop singer Mandy Moore. While Enigk primarily handled guitar and vocals on the album, he also contributed bass, drums and keyboards to various songs. Drummer Kaanan Tupper, bassist Nick Macri and guitarist Greg Saran round out the album’s primary players.
World Waits will be released October 17 through Enigk’s own Lewis Hollow Records, which will be distributed by Reincarnate Records through SONY BMG.

¡Forward, Russia! - Give Me A Wall por TheBooth:
You know the story. Group of friends get together in their hometown and form a band. Move to the big city to make it big. Become the buzz band of the moment. Sign to a major label. Record that big budget album. Hit the charts Well, throw that story out the window. Here come ¡Forward, Russia! - smashing the template & re-writing the rulebook. Part of the story is true. The punk foursome - siblings Katie and Whiskas, and friends Tom and Rob (who had played together in the Black Helicopters) came together as ¡Forward, Russia! in their northern English hometown of Leeds. And yes, the band launched 2006 with their Twelve single smashing into the British top-40 charts. The rest in-between well, thats a whole different tale.
This one is an upstart DIY story more Fugazi than Razorlight where the band stayed in their Leeds hometown becoming an anchor in the burgeoning scene there. Forming their own label - Dance To The Radio the bands first release was a split single with their buddies This Et Al, with an early recording of Nine. ¡Forward, Russia! then proceeded to spend the next twelve months doing more gigs than anyone could think humanly possible playing the length and breadth of the UK.
Their debut full length, Give Me A Wall (produced by Paul Tipler) sees ¡Forward, Russia! fulfill the promise they have shown on their four sell-out UK singles to date. Having hit the UK charts in January with 'Twelve', they followed that with a repeat performance - the newly re-recorded version of Nine hitting the top-40 in May an unlikely candidate, with its angular punk rock intensity. The single was perfect lead in to the release of the album set to be one of the most startling debuts of 2006.
Give Me A Wall is searing and energetic, a statement of intent. Anyone witnessing the band live (on their brief sneak attacks into the USA - playing SXSW, NYC, LA and SF) will have seen a sharpening of this sense of purpose. Confident and focused, the band have brought a thousand ideas together and produced an exuberant record that sets out their intentions.
With buzz building at a whip smart pace, it was only a matter of time before a partner was chosen for North America Mute Records. A label itself that was spawned as a DIY exercise a vehicle for the self-release of founder Daniel Millers single by the Normal and with a reputation for legendary releases spanning punk rock to dance classics, and the most artist friendly of environments. So, rather than a signing, it became a partnership -. Mute becoming ¡Forward, Russia!'s home, ready to launch into action September 2006 with the release of Give Me a Wall. Direct and unwavering, it is an album that demonstrates that ¡Forward, Russia! live up to their potential - the knockout punch everyone was hoping for.

These New Yorkers have some serious talent. What I found when I ventured to their simple (yet charming) website was a bunch of neat, folky indie/rock songs. Their sound is so familiar, but not stale. I spent a few hours last night listening to "They Built You Up Too Fast," "Joshua and Professor Faulkner," and "American Queen" trying to pinpoint who they sound like. Even after scanning thorugh my extensive iTunes library, I couldn't really put my finger on it. I heard a little bit of Yo La Tengo. A little American Analog Set. And even a little Neutral Milk Hotel. Yet those comparisions still don't really work all that well. I really can't wait to hear more. - Welcome to the Midwest!

A Shoreline Dream - Avoiding The Consequences
WEB
MySpace
"I think what's key is the story. The meaning. The visualization and fantasy of wanting to break free from the society, which over the years has tried to form us into something that we're not. The album itself is a cry for a day void of corporate leadership, impersonal lifestyles, and ignorance to those we care about. We live in a time with too many options - too many ways of avoiding the consequences.
A concept album is often times a vehicle of musical expression that infrequently seems to meet its goals. By making a record that is supposed to send a message through story and coherence, theres the consideration of everything surrounding it. Similar to scoring films, concept albums do not provide the kind of visual aid that comes with cinematic expression. Album art is often the one visual crutch to lean on, but as worthwhile as it feels to have a records finished product in your hands, the popularity of download in its non-material, digital format is overwhelming.
With their debut LP, Denver-based A Shoreline Dream present a truly unique concept album titled Avoiding The Consequences, which hold appreciation and awareness as two of its stronger intentions. Dark, poetic, and ambient, tracks like Saturday Morning and Love Is A Ghost In America nail the notion that the band has already realized their sound with their very first record together. The melodic rhythm of Focus The Present is reminiscent of some of the best shoegaze with a black metal undertone. Our lives have become broken by our disarray, sings Ryan Policky, who also handles guitar, keys, and all sampling for the album. Much like VAST and Black Rebel Motorcycle Clubs first record or Bjorks Vespertine, Motherly Advice is a paramount example of using vocals as a major part of the instrumentation.
The quartet has been making music for at least ten years, as well as using other professional artistic outlets as forms of expression (i.e. photography, graphic design, painting, filmmaking, producing, DJing, etc.) Drummer Gabriel Ratliff also spends his time doing one of at least eight major outdoor sports, and feels that everything we choose to do in life, in some form or another provides influence in his music. Appreciation of them, he says, gives so much more meaning to the art.
A Shoreline Dreams record has a message that is realized by the quality of its production, which was done at the recording studio that has devoured most of Polickys home (Shoreline Studios). Production is the most important part of any bands sound, he says, and those who push the limits and refuse to do whats technically correct always get me off. Layered, harmonic, and still dark in its own right, the band wanted to capture something unique with the idea of escaping the delusions imposed by modern industrial society, and embracing our real personas, goals, and need for sincere interaction with others on emotional and intellectual levels. The names of the band, album, website, and song titles are no coincidence, and though the artwork strongly supports the quartets ideas, the songs are the strongest relay of their ideas and intentions.

Newsum Turn

MySpace
Componentes:
Luke Wedgebury, Neal Chambers, Alistair Brown, Andy Newberry, Chris Wiseman
Bio en su MySpace:
Formed in late 2003 when three best friends from the same village decided to start playing music together. They later involved a bass player and Newsum Turn were born. Playing the usual venues in and around the Leicester area the band quickly established themselves on the local scene, earning a reputation as talented newcomers. Newsum Turn began to grow. After the first year spent writing, recording and gigging all over the country, the lads were keen to involve a keyboard player and soon the final line up came together. They are based in the east midlands where all five members live. Now the band have become what they wanted to be, and things are looking good for Newsum Turn. After the success of various London shows, the band went on to support the likes of Snow Patrol, Editors, The Upper Room, Tom Vek, BellX1 to name but a few. The band have recieved very positive reviews from the BBC and substantial airtime on BBC Radio Leicester. Newsum Turn are continuing to write and record new material.

Maarten Kooijman: guitar, vocals
Diets Dijkstra: bass, vocals

Bio de su web:
"Dutch pop band Johan released one swell self-titled album in 1997, marrying the jittery indie guitar strum of the Wedding Present to the cool, ironic retro-pop charms of the Cardigans and the manic hooks of the best Buzzcocks singles. Formed in Hoorn, Netherlands, by singer Jacco de Greeuw and drummer Wim Kwakman, the quartet was originally called Visions of Johanna after the Bob Dylan song. When the duo decided that name was a bit pretentious and vague, they shortened it to Johan in honor of the Dutch football star Johan Cruyff. After guitarist Remco Krull and bassist Niels de Wit joined the group, Johan signed with the Amsterdam-based indie Excelsior Recordings and produced their self-titled album in 1996. The New York label Spin Art optioned it for U.S. release the following year, but Krull and de Wit left the group shortly thereafter. Jacco de Greeuw and Wim Kwakman worked off and on for two years on the follow-up album, adding Diets Dijkstra on guitar and vocals, Diederik Nomden on keyboards, guitar and vocals as well as Maarten Kooijman on guitar and vocals. Pergola was released in 2001."

The coral sea "Volcano and heart"

Soaring debut album from Santa Barbara atmospheric pop outfit. "The art-rock majesty of The Coral Sea emerges breathtaking, it steals from your soul, unsurpassed in this part of the world." Well, The Santa Barbara Independent aint kidding either, The Coral Sea’s debut is a hypnotic and mellow dreamrock album that calls to mind classic albums by Bowie, Pink Floyd and The Beatles, with current comparisons ranging from Yo La Tengo’s melodic blue-streak zoom-pop to Radiohead’s impassioned layered vocal/guitar impressionism. Imagine a stratospherically skillful space-pop quartet with an entire string section behind it, and you'll be on their wavelength, but for me it all comes down to the voice. Frontman/founder Rey Villalobos’ vocals steal the show: a luminous, sometimes androgynous croon, a silvery warble, without a glimmer of pretension…and here my closest comparison of the moment is Mercury Rev’s Jonathan Donahue (but Rey’s voice is leagues richer and less dependent on effects) and Parasol’s very own Kevin Tihista (with a bunch more Thom Yorke than KT’s ever going to show us), especially in the lyrics and phrasing departments.
THE TRIPWIRE:
"When the perfect combination of production and songwriting come together, the result is usually magical. Case in point: Los Angeles' The Coral Sea. Their debut album, Volcano And Hearts, is the perfect example of beautiful songwriting whose quality and perfection is augmented by the effortless arrangements and crispness of its recording technique... The first thirty seconds of this album has more mystery and elegance in it than any other album I've heard in a long while. It's got the guitar of a classic U2 song and the strings of Eleanor Rigby. It takes a page right out of the George Martin recording guide..." (Jeffrey Thrope)

Fresh hand-picked rhythms and digital delights stirred by sweet guitar melodies and playful vocal harmonies offer an excellent combination that will please the most demanding ears. If we flavour it with a measure of the warm sound of the trumpet, we can be sure we've found a unique listening experience.
2003 - a fortuitous encounter in the Conservatory of Santiago de Compostela leads Raul Mon and Ivan Oubiña to meet again one sunny afternoon to explore their musical affinities. After a couple of demos, last August they finish recording on their home studio their most ambitious work so far, "Far from perfect", a scent of the refined Morr cuisine simmering on an electronic base.

Literally from that 'Basement On a Hill' their late Texas brother Elliott Smith referred to, this quartet refuses to be kept underground. Since their formation in late 2003, Modico has turned heads and raised eyebrows all across Texas. Hailing from Fort Worth, Modico's beginnings are rooted where the roots actually grow; from the basement of a house on a hill. Modico set out to create something new and something original. Just like Dre, they've spent time "in the lab, with the pen and the pad" constantly experimenting, creating, and recreating. The end product is something that the ear begs to hear and the soul yearns to feel.
With cannon fire bass, bullet time drums, and guitars that will put you to sleep the turn around and bombard your senses, Modico takes the stage as if it were a battle field. Steadfast and ready for action, this band has an objective that exceeds superficial stardom. Modico is concerned with the world they see, and what they can do to improve it. "There's a lot of fear in the world today, a lot of depression, a lot of hopelessness, a lot of people believing that this life is pain. We are at war with that mentality. Hope does exist, and that's what we're here to say" (Thomas Ketchersid - Guitar/Vocals).
While embracing their influences, Modico seems to turn a blind eye. What they have is "something fresh and entirely their own" (Jason M, Sample Press). It's a new experience that transcends the static poppiness that floods the radio and demands you to move from the pretentious indie wasteland that plagues the internet. This is music for those who are fed up with the status quo. This is music for anyone who has ever questioned, why? This is music for a revolution.
There's nothing to fear.

TSM Radio MySpace
Wow. I just said wow. We're going to s**t our pants.
Haruka's favorite artist from Scotland "The Mars Patrol" were the guest on Show #36!! If Haruka could go to LA,she could've met them in person.....That would be so surprising for her!!! OMG!!!!! But instead, she talked to them on Live hotline. (Don't be jealous people!!) Not only that,Stu Stone was gonna meet her in Boston!! I'll tell you what,he'll have some great stories about meeting with the famous Haruka From Japan, maybe next week on the program. (You will know if she really is tall or not lol)
Anyways,The Mars Patrol are very wonderful and nice people. TSM Radio really love them. I'm glad to hear Justin Trugman finally met them!!! They've got great music & awesome jokes. Stephen Parker's got the fantastic acccents. Ross Nelson definitely likes "7 Minutes in Heaven"?! Davina Divine is the finest. They are currently in California now and will be back to Scotland soon. I hope they will be on the show with Haruka and her friends sometime or you'll miss one of the amazing histories of TSMLand.

The Mary Onettes are as close to arenarock as you'll ever get on Labrador. Inspired by guitar pop from the 80's, indie bands from the 90's and the talent to make the best songs you'll ever hear in they 00's they sound like a Swedish relative to Echo & The Bunnymen, The Smiths och The Jesus and Mary Chain from the future.

Headlights
Indie / Pop / Rock

Bio recogida en su WEB:
From its inception, Headlights has represented an exercise in developing a musical vision. Following years of bringing the visions of others to life in the acclaimed pop act Absinthe Blind (Parasol Records), the three members of Headlights together provide insight into what they brought to the table in their former band, as well as how it limited them. In an immense and prosperous moment, the band is now more than ever an entity of its own. Simply put, Headlights is anything but mere byproduct.
Following the demise of Absinthe Blind, Erin Fein and Brett Sanderson formed the short-lived guitarless band Orphans, which provided Fein a developmental first outlet as principle songwriter. Soon, Tristan Wraight returned to Champaign from a stint on the road as touring guitarist for Maserati and joined the band, invoking a startling change as he and Fein began a prolific period of songwriting together. The band changed completely, and in the thaw of the Illinois spring of 2004, Headlights was born in a farmhouse just north of Champaign.
The band quickly put together a set of songs and The Enemies EP was recorded at the band's farmhouse studio in a flourish. The EP was released to critical acclaim as a limited edition mail- order and tour-only EP. The first pressing sold out in a matter of a few short months. Headlights went on to share the stage with The Delgados, Mates of State, Magnolia Electric Co., The Appleseed Cast, Headphones, Mono, Earlimart, to name a few.
Headlights has been on tour long and often since, first branching throughout the Midwest and finally crossing the country (and back, several times now). In the process, Wraight and Fein have come to fruition as songwriters. Songs from Kill Them With Kindness found their way into setlists throughout 2005, with each show leaving old fans agog and gaining new fans to boot. The separate instrumental entities of Headlights' three members seems to become more coherent with each sitting, highlighting the band's development of an uncanny knack for soaring peaks and energetic compositions. The brilliant desperation of The Enemies EP proves to be alive and well in the new compositions but now accompanying it is a flourish of pop-orchestra instrumentation and epic harmonies. The promise inherent in Headlights' debut LP brought The Enemies EP an official release in non-limited form in November of 2005, and Headlights consequentially became an official member of the Polyvinyl Record Co. family.
2006 has been nothing if not a bright year so far. Headlights is currently wrapping up a monstrous 72-date tour and the band has released a split 7" with Ontario's Most Serene Republic (Arts & Crafts). Come August, the band's debut LP Kill Them With Kindness will bear its pretty face. The long-anticipated LP will shock even already-dedicated fans with its breadth and beauty, while newcomers have no choice but to fall in love: it's the power of pop music done perfectly, or at least perfectly enough to induce breathlessness; perhaps even the far-away look of being completely consumed, of jubilance. Kill Them With Kindness is a record huge and full and conclusive, a keystone installment in a developing watershed year. Expect more touring in support of the album, and the inevitable realization that Headlights is poised to be recognized as one of America's next top indie acts.
