Lara Meyerratken

I'm on tour mostly always. Currently still very busy with Ben Lee and 'the little album that could', Awake Is The New Sleep. Days before we were about to record, I remember setting up my room in our excellent Laurel Canyon house, and hearing Ben in the next room play his then new song 'Whatever It Is'. I sat down on the floor and felt the beginnings of what continues to be a constantly surprising cell-re-arranging experience. That I get to assist in delivering these gorgeous songs to Ben's rapidly-increasing audience is a huge and usually fascinating blessing. Lots of people at BL shows ask if I had/have other projects. Well I used to play in a band called Lustre 4 with my lovely oldest friend Sally, of Arts and Crafts band New Buffalo. We, well especially I, screamed a lot, and I played lead guitar and enjoyed playing Big Muff/Rat pedal guitar solos. We were 18 and feisty. At around the same time I played drums in a band called Sneeze. Ben asked me to join his band as his keyboard player at the end of '98. I had 6 weeks of art school left, but had to be in NY within three... Insanely good news to me-like winning the lottery-as I had been in a stupefying haze of love for New York, and this offer meant re-locating there. Since then I've also toured with some other bands, highlights being Luna and the late Luscious Jackson. In '04 there was some singing for the Crooked Fingers' latest album, that was so fun and educational and made me feel a bit special. OK, so way back in the early 00's, when I was at home more, I would write my own songs, and record lots in my bedroom. I love recording so, SO much. I had a show (El May) at Southpaw that was so much fun for me, that I thought I might pop. I haven't yet managed to write my songs while Im touring so constantly. Mostly because I'm a bit scared, a bit lazy, a bit of a perfectionist, and a bit of a romantic about how these things get made. So these songs here are old. More songs are on their way though, then there'll be a record. Thanks for reading all this, Lara M
