Bizarre

Mandi Perkins

Rock / Pop / Alternative

Los Angeles, California, United States

WEB
MySpace

Info en su MySpace:
Mandi Perkins is a real and emotional singer/songwriter who creates uncompromising melodic rock. Her music makes listeners care, think, and question. Born and raised in Toronto, Canada, Mandi grew up surrounded by music and she began writing songs and performing on stage when she was just a small child. It was at this time in her life that Mandi also became fascinated by musical theatre and she performed in a variety of plays including: Annie, Les Miserables, and The Wizard of Oz. At the age of sixteen, she was chosen to perform the National Anthem at the Skydome in Toronto. One year later, Mandi placed first in a nationwide singing competition.

Mandi's ambitions inspired a move to California to pursue both her music career and to obtain a university degree. She attended UC Berkeley where she graduated with honors in English Literature. Her extensive studies enabled her to improve her songwriting skills. Mandi focused on words in many different contexts and she saw how each separate grouping of letters shaped the communications of the world. She began applying this knowledge to her lyrics in order to honestly express her thoughts.

Immediately following graduation, Mandi made a move to Los Angeles in order to fully dedicate herself to music. Mandi consistently delights packed audiences with her enthusiastic performances and her captivating voice. Mandi describes her music as being, "intense and melodic... the vocals and lyrics are rich with intensity and they float on passionate guitar textures and vibrant pulsating drums." Each of Mandi's songs stems from her own personal experiences and the lives of the people close to her. One of the most noticeable aspects of Mandi's music is that there is deep emotion combined with hauntingly edgy musical sequences and harmonies. "I write songs from my stomach," she says. "I will take an event that has happened to me immediately following its conclusion and I will stretch it out until its at the rawest form. Once I have the emotion explode on paper, I am much more at ease. Songwriting is cathartic for me. I think its great to passionately feel, but there is a point when you should make sure you have an outlet, especially when the excess baggage takes control of your life. Hopefully listening to my music will be cathartic for other people." Mandi has sold over 5,000 CD's and digital downloads of her EP and is endorsed by A&R WorldWide.

"Mandi Perkins is undoubtedly one of the freshest, most prolific songwriters to hit the U.S. from our North American neighbor. Consistently delighting audiences with her enthusiastic performances, her "take no prisoners" attitude, and her contagious melodic rock, Perkins is set for fame." -- BMI

James o'toole is a well known dublin street musician who has decided to start working on getting his numerous original songs out to other musicians and the public.... james was born in dublin's fatima mansions flats complex (which, for those of you not from ireland,is a pretty grim place to live) and grew up there and in crumlin....james has been writing songs for many years and has taught himself to play numerous instruments (everything except drums on the above tracks was performed by james).... " music has been and will always be my rope if i ever feel like i'm going under, i feel like i've built up so much anger and fire in my belly because of the state of the world, maybe because of where i grew up, but music is the soothing balm, it's my release valve, it stops me from exploding!...in the last year i've really felt that i've been discovering my voice gaining the range i needed to express myself completely..."

Componentes:

When At the Drive-In called it quits just before becoming massive, it seemed like they had blown a one-shot opportunity. Not so. While vocalist Cedric Bixler and guitarist Omar Rodriguez went off and formed the self-consciously weird Mars Volta, the Afro-free faction of ATDI--guitarist Jim Ward, bassist Paul Hinojos, and drummer Tony Hajjar--handily carried on under the new guise of Sparta. This quick-to-the-point EP, produced by Jerry Finn (Green Day, Blink 182), features the familiar sound of clipped rhythms, oblique vocals, and fuzzed-out guitars, but it also sounds insidiously fresh. Tracks like "Mye" and "Vacant Skies" update ATDI's taut fury with a most agreeable luster, while the pure force of the music remains respectfully undiminished. --Aidin Vaziri

WEB
MySpace

Componentes:
Jesse Coppenbarger - vocals, guitar, keys;
Jimmy Cajoleas - guitars;
Drew Mellon - bass, sampler;
Len Clark - drums, vocals;
Sean Kirkpatrick - guitar, vocals, keys

Info recogida en su MySpace:
Colour Revolts name is derived from Edwin Abbotts 19th century social commentary, Flatland, an exploration of life in two dimensions. But Colour Revolt is far from two-dimensional, eschewing Fletchers familiar sonic assault of unorthodox song structures and time signatures for a more melancholic though equally guitar-driven aesthetic of the post-grunge Southern gothic.

The bands thematic impulse reflects the literary heritage of their native Oxford, Miss., channeling the jagged emotionality and moral ambiguity of the locales forefathers, William Faulkner and Barry Hannah. Another facet of the small university town is music, serving as the home to the neo-blues pioneering of Fat Possum Records and in-demand Sweet Tea Recording studio.

But it was outside any proper studio that the songs on the Colour Revolt EP took form. Scheduled to record in a friends basement in Jackson, Miss. in late August 2005, Hurricane Katrina struck the same weekend, pushing storm evacuees into the recording space. With nowhere to record in a city lacking electricity, the band set up shop with a ProTools rig in the living room of the owner of Esperanza Plantation, a small local record label, also home to the band. Forced into a DIY approach, the band used a pair of pantyhose as a windscreen and built a vocal booth out of spare cardboard boxes and leftover brooms.

After several weekends of tracking in between the bands full-time gig as college students, several of the songs caught the attention of Clay Jones, a Sweet Tea engineer who has mixed Elvis Costello and Modest Mouse albums. Jones lent post-production help and mixed the entirety of the EP. Esperanza Plantation provided a small-scale release for the EP in December 2005.

Produced by former bass player Steven Bevilaqua, the Colour Revolt EP reflects a young band that thinks old. The songs emanate a spiritual and existential urgency, which is only accentuated by singer Jesse Coppenbargers vocal thrust, ranging from fragile whispers to guttural screams back to pointy falsetto. The bands three-guitar approach provides an offsetting soundscape, where intricate guitar interplay meets understated harmonies.

On October 3, the Colour Revolt EP will be re-released by Tiny Evil (Nine Black Alps, Jimmy Eat World), an imprint of Interscope Records.

Jeremy Enigk

Seattle, Washington

MySpace
web

Info en el blog de su MySpace:
The last time Jeremy Enigk, the singer and songwriter for emocore pioneers Sunny Day Real Estate and The Fire Theft, released a solo album, Hilary was testifying about Whitewater, Dolly was being cloned, and the Ramones were about to play their last gig.

It’s been awhile.

That album, 1996’s Return of the Frog Queen earned Enigk raves from critics and fans alike for its lush pop orchestration and enigmatic lyrics. Since then, he’s put out three more discs with Sunny Day, plus The Fire Theft’s debut. But now he’s back with World Waits to pick up where he left off a decade ago. And he starts, appropriately enough, with a triumphant track called “A New Beginning.”

“I realized that starting off the record with such a bombastic thing had a tie-in to 'Return of the Frog Queen,’” Enigk says, “as if it were taking off where ‘Frog Queen’ left off.”

Of course, no one who has followed Enigk’s roller coaster career — band break-ups, band reunions, a controversial conversion to Christianity in the mid-‘90s — would expect him to be the same person he was 10 years ago. And he’s not.

“I’ve grown and changed, mainly spiritually,” he says. “I think I’ve become a lot more accepting of things I wasn’t back then. Through experiences, I’ve opened up a little bit. You just grow up.”

Enigk assembled the songs on World Waits over the course of the past decade. Among the 10 cuts are two that were slated for a follow up to ROTFQ that was interrupted by Sunny Day Real Estate activity, others that Enigk originally intended for The Fire Theft, and still others written as recently as six months ago.

He calls the ruminative title track his “love song to the world.”

“There are simple solutions to simple problems,” he said. “People are starving — feed ‘em. As an American especially, it’s so easy for me to put on blinders and live in TV land. That frustrates me, that laziness to take responsibility.”

If World Waits has more rock and less chamber texture than its predecessor, they both share a timelessness in sound that has roots in Enigk’s lifelong love for The Beatles, The Who and vintage U2.

Enigk co-produced World Waits with Josh Myers, who has arranged strings for artists ranging from indie songwriter Rosie Thomas to pop singer Mandy Moore. While Enigk primarily handled guitar and vocals on the album, he also contributed bass, drums and keyboards to various songs. Drummer Kaanan Tupper, bassist Nick Macri and guitarist Greg Saran round out the album’s primary players.

World Waits will be released October 17 through Enigk’s own Lewis Hollow Records, which will be distributed by Reincarnate Records through SONY BMG.

¡Forward, Russia! - Give Me A Wall por TheBooth:

You know the story. Group of friends get together in their hometown and form a band. Move to the big city to make it big. Become the buzz band of the moment. Sign to a major label. Record that big budget album. Hit the charts Well, throw that story out the window. Here come ¡Forward, Russia! - smashing the template & re-writing the rulebook. Part of the story is true. The punk foursome - siblings Katie and Whiskas, and friends Tom and Rob (who had played together in the Black Helicopters) came together as ¡Forward, Russia! in their northern English hometown of Leeds. And yes, the band launched 2006 with their Twelve single smashing into the British top-40 charts. The rest in-between well, thats a whole different tale.

This one is an upstart DIY story more Fugazi than Razorlight where the band stayed in their Leeds hometown becoming an anchor in the burgeoning scene there. Forming their own label - Dance To The Radio the bands first release was a split single with their buddies This Et Al, with an early recording of Nine. ¡Forward, Russia! then proceeded to spend the next twelve months doing more gigs than anyone could think humanly possible playing the length and breadth of the UK.

Their debut full length, Give Me A Wall (produced by Paul Tipler) sees ¡Forward, Russia! fulfill the promise they have shown on their four sell-out UK singles to date. Having hit the UK charts in January with 'Twelve', they followed that with a repeat performance - the newly re-recorded version of Nine hitting the top-40 in May an unlikely candidate, with its angular punk rock intensity. The single was perfect lead in to the release of the album set to be one of the most startling debuts of 2006.

Give Me A Wall is searing and energetic, a statement of intent. Anyone witnessing the band live (on their brief sneak attacks into the USA - playing SXSW, NYC, LA and SF) will have seen a sharpening of this sense of purpose. Confident and focused, the band have brought a thousand ideas together and produced an exuberant record that sets out their intentions.

With buzz building at a whip smart pace, it was only a matter of time before a partner was chosen for North America Mute Records. A label itself that was spawned as a DIY exercise a vehicle for the self-release of founder Daniel Millers single by the Normal and with a reputation for legendary releases spanning punk rock to dance classics, and the most artist friendly of environments. So, rather than a signing, it became a partnership -. Mute becoming ¡Forward, Russia!'s home, ready to launch into action September 2006 with the release of Give Me a Wall. Direct and unwavering, it is an album that demonstrates that ¡Forward, Russia! live up to their potential - the knockout punch everyone was hoping for.

Info sobre su disco We are safer at night (Insound)

These New Yorkers have some serious talent. What I found when I ventured to their simple (yet charming) website was a bunch of neat, folky indie/rock songs. Their sound is so familiar, but not stale. I spent a few hours last night listening to "They Built You Up Too Fast," "Joshua and Professor Faulkner," and "American Queen" trying to pinpoint who they sound like. Even after scanning thorugh my extensive iTunes library, I couldn't really put my finger on it. I heard a little bit of Yo La Tengo. A little American Analog Set. And even a little Neutral Milk Hotel. Yet those comparisions still don't really work all that well. I really can't wait to hear more. - Welcome to the Midwest!

A Shoreline Dream - Avoiding The Consequences

WEB
MySpace

"I think what's key is the story. The meaning. The visualization and fantasy of wanting to break free from the society, which over the years has tried to form us into something that we're not. The album itself is a cry for a day void of corporate leadership, impersonal lifestyles, and ignorance to those we care about. We live in a time with too many options - too many ways of avoiding the consequences.

A concept album is often times a vehicle of musical expression that infrequently seems to meet its goals. By making a record that is supposed to send a message through story and coherence, theres the consideration of everything surrounding it. Similar to scoring films, concept albums do not provide the kind of visual aid that comes with cinematic expression. Album art is often the one visual crutch to lean on, but as worthwhile as it feels to have a records finished product in your hands, the popularity of download in its non-material, digital format is overwhelming.

With their debut LP, Denver-based A Shoreline Dream present a truly unique concept album titled Avoiding The Consequences, which hold appreciation and awareness as two of its stronger intentions. Dark, poetic, and ambient, tracks like Saturday Morning and Love Is A Ghost In America nail the notion that the band has already realized their sound with their very first record together. The melodic rhythm of Focus The Present is reminiscent of some of the best shoegaze with a black metal undertone. Our lives have become broken by our disarray, sings Ryan Policky, who also handles guitar, keys, and all sampling for the album. Much like VAST and Black Rebel Motorcycle Clubs first record or Bjorks Vespertine, Motherly Advice is a paramount example of using vocals as a major part of the instrumentation.

The quartet has been making music for at least ten years, as well as using other professional artistic outlets as forms of expression (i.e. photography, graphic design, painting, filmmaking, producing, DJing, etc.) Drummer Gabriel Ratliff also spends his time doing one of at least eight major outdoor sports, and feels that everything we choose to do in life, in some form or another provides influence in his music. Appreciation of them, he says, gives so much more meaning to the art.

A Shoreline Dreams record has a message that is realized by the quality of its production, which was done at the recording studio that has devoured most of Polickys home (Shoreline Studios). Production is the most important part of any bands sound, he says, and those who push the limits and refuse to do whats technically correct always get me off. Layered, harmonic, and still dark in its own right, the band wanted to capture something unique with the idea of escaping the delusions imposed by modern industrial society, and embracing our real personas, goals, and need for sincere interaction with others on emotional and intellectual levels. The names of the band, album, website, and song titles are no coincidence, and though the artwork strongly supports the quartets ideas, the songs are the strongest relay of their ideas and intentions.

Newsum Turn

domingo, septiembre 17, 2006

Componentes:

Bio en su MySpace:
Formed in late 2003 when three best friends from the same village decided to start playing music together. They later involved a bass player and Newsum Turn were born. Playing the usual venues in and around the Leicester area the band quickly established themselves on the local scene, earning a reputation as talented newcomers. Newsum Turn began to grow. After the first year spent writing, recording and gigging all over the country, the lads were keen to involve a keyboard player and soon the final line up came together. They are based in the east midlands where all five members live. Now the band have become what they wanted to be, and things are looking good for Newsum Turn. After the success of various London shows, the band went on to support the likes of Snow Patrol, Editors, The Upper Room, Tom Vek, BellX1 to name but a few. The band have recieved very positive reviews from the BBC and substantial airtime on BBC Radio Leicester. Newsum Turn are continuing to write and record new material.

Componentes:
Jacco de Greeuw: vocals, guitar
Maarten Kooijman: guitar, vocals
Diets Dijkstra: bass, vocals
Jeroen Kleijn: drums

Bio de su web:

"Dutch pop band Johan released one swell self-titled album in 1997, marrying the jittery indie guitar strum of the Wedding Present to the cool, ironic retro-pop charms of the Cardigans and the manic hooks of the best Buzzcocks singles. Formed in Hoorn, Netherlands, by singer Jacco de Greeuw and drummer Wim Kwakman, the quartet was originally called Visions of Johanna after the Bob Dylan song. When the duo decided that name was a bit pretentious and vague, they shortened it to Johan in honor of the Dutch football star Johan Cruyff. After guitarist Remco Krull and bassist Niels de Wit joined the group, Johan signed with the Amsterdam-based indie Excelsior Recordings and produced their self-titled album in 1996. The New York label Spin Art optioned it for U.S. release the following year, but Krull and de Wit left the group shortly thereafter. Jacco de Greeuw and Wim Kwakman worked off and on for two years on the follow-up album, adding Diets Dijkstra on guitar and vocals, Diederik Nomden on keyboards, guitar and vocals as well as Maarten Kooijman on guitar and vocals. Pergola was released in 2001."

The coral sea "Volcano and heart"

Soaring debut album from Santa Barbara atmospheric pop outfit. "The art-rock majesty of The Coral Sea emerges breathtaking, it steals from your soul, unsurpassed in this part of the world." Well, The Santa Barbara Independent aint kidding either, The Coral Sea’s debut is a hypnotic and mellow dreamrock album that calls to mind classic albums by Bowie, Pink Floyd and The Beatles, with current comparisons ranging from Yo La Tengo’s melodic blue-streak zoom-pop to Radiohead’s impassioned layered vocal/guitar impressionism. Imagine a stratospherically skillful space-pop quartet with an entire string section behind it, and you'll be on their wavelength, but for me it all comes down to the voice. Frontman/founder Rey Villalobos’ vocals steal the show: a luminous, sometimes androgynous croon, a silvery warble, without a glimmer of pretension…and here my closest comparison of the moment is Mercury Rev’s Jonathan Donahue (but Rey’s voice is leagues richer and less dependent on effects) and Parasol’s very own Kevin Tihista (with a bunch more Thom Yorke than KT’s ever going to show us), especially in the lyrics and phrasing departments.

THE TRIPWIRE:
"When the perfect combination of production and songwriting come together, the result is usually magical. Case in point: Los Angeles' The Coral Sea. Their debut album, Volcano And Hearts, is the perfect example of beautiful songwriting whose quality and perfection is augmented by the effortless arrangements and crispness of its recording technique... The first thirty seconds of this album has more mystery and elegance in it than any other album I've heard in a long while. It's got the guitar of a classic U2 song and the strings of Eleanor Rigby. It takes a page right out of the George Martin recording guide..." (Jeffrey Thrope)

Every now and then, the intimacy of the bedroom comes up with a perfect recipe for delicious electronic pop. Fresh hand-picked rhythms and digital delights stirred by sweet guitar melodies and playful vocal harmonies offer an excellent combination that will please the most demanding ears. If we flavour it with a measure of the warm sound of the trumpet, we can be sure we've found a unique listening experience.

2003 - a fortuitous encounter in the Conservatory of Santiago de Compostela leads Raul Mon and Ivan Oubiña to meet again one sunny afternoon to explore their musical affinities. After a couple of demos, last August they finish recording on their home studio their most ambitious work so far, "Far from perfect", a scent of the refined Morr cuisine simmering on an electronic base.

Modico - EP (FREE!!)

Indie / Alternative / Rock
Norman, Oklahoma, United States

MySpace
WEB

Componentes:

Thomas Ketchersid - guitar, vocals
Cole Watkins - guitar, vocals
John Cope - bass, vocals
Toby Rozell - drums, vocals

Info en su MySpace:
Literally from that 'Basement On a Hill' their late Texas brother Elliott Smith referred to, this quartet refuses to be kept underground. Since their formation in late 2003, Modico has turned heads and raised eyebrows all across Texas. Hailing from Fort Worth, Modico's beginnings are rooted where the roots actually grow; from the basement of a house on a hill. Modico set out to create something new and something original. Just like Dre, they've spent time "in the lab, with the pen and the pad" constantly experimenting, creating, and recreating. The end product is something that the ear begs to hear and the soul yearns to feel.

With cannon fire bass, bullet time drums, and guitars that will put you to sleep the turn around and bombard your senses, Modico takes the stage as if it were a battle field. Steadfast and ready for action, this band has an objective that exceeds superficial stardom. Modico is concerned with the world they see, and what they can do to improve it. "There's a lot of fear in the world today, a lot of depression, a lot of hopelessness, a lot of people believing that this life is pain. We are at war with that mentality. Hope does exist, and that's what we're here to say" (Thomas Ketchersid - Guitar/Vocals).

While embracing their influences, Modico seems to turn a blind eye. What they have is "something fresh and entirely their own" (Jason M, Sample Press). It's a new experience that transcends the static poppiness that floods the radio and demands you to move from the pretentious indie wasteland that plagues the internet. This is music for those who are fed up with the status quo. This is music for anyone who has ever questioned, why? This is music for a revolution.

There's nothing to fear.

Wow. I just said wow. We're going to s**t our pants.

Haruka's favorite artist from Scotland "The Mars Patrol" were the guest on Show #36!! If Haruka could go to LA,she could've met them in person.....That would be so surprising for her!!! OMG!!!!! But instead, she talked to them on Live hotline. (Don't be jealous people!!) Not only that,Stu Stone was gonna meet her in Boston!! I'll tell you what,he'll have some great stories about meeting with the famous Haruka From Japan, maybe next week on the program. (You will know if she really is tall or not lol)

Anyways,The Mars Patrol are very wonderful and nice people. TSM Radio really love them. I'm glad to hear Justin Trugman finally met them!!! They've got great music & awesome jokes. Stephen Parker's got the fantastic acccents. Ross Nelson definitely likes "7 Minutes in Heaven"?! Davina Divine is the finest. They are currently in California now and will be back to Scotland soon. I hope they will be on the show with Haruka and her friends sometime or you'll miss one of the amazing histories of TSMLand.

Headlights

martes, septiembre 12, 2006

Indie / Pop / Rock
CHAMPAIGN, ILLINOIS, United States

WEB
MySpace

Bio recogida en su WEB:
From its inception, Headlights has represented an exercise in developing a musical vision. Following years of bringing the visions of others to life in the acclaimed pop act Absinthe Blind (Parasol Records), the three members of Headlights together provide insight into what they brought to the table in their former band, as well as how it limited them. In an immense and prosperous moment, the band is now more than ever an entity of its own. Simply put, Headlights is anything but mere byproduct.

Following the demise of Absinthe Blind, Erin Fein and Brett Sanderson formed the short-lived guitarless band Orphans, which provided Fein a developmental first outlet as principle songwriter. Soon, Tristan Wraight returned to Champaign from a stint on the road as touring guitarist for Maserati and joined the band, invoking a startling change as he and Fein began a prolific period of songwriting together. The band changed completely, and in the thaw of the Illinois spring of 2004, Headlights was born in a farmhouse just north of Champaign.

The band quickly put together a set of songs and The Enemies EP was recorded at the band's farmhouse studio in a flourish. The EP was released to critical acclaim as a limited edition mail- order and tour-only EP. The first pressing sold out in a matter of a few short months. Headlights went on to share the stage with The Delgados, Mates of State, Magnolia Electric Co., The Appleseed Cast, Headphones, Mono, Earlimart, to name a few.

Headlights has been on tour long and often since, first branching throughout the Midwest and finally crossing the country (and back, several times now). In the process, Wraight and Fein have come to fruition as songwriters. Songs from Kill Them With Kindness found their way into setlists throughout 2005, with each show leaving old fans agog and gaining new fans to boot. The separate instrumental entities of Headlights' three members seems to become more coherent with each sitting, highlighting the band's development of an uncanny knack for soaring peaks and energetic compositions. The brilliant desperation of The Enemies EP proves to be alive and well in the new compositions but now accompanying it is a flourish of pop-orchestra instrumentation and epic harmonies. The promise inherent in Headlights' debut LP brought The Enemies EP an official release in non-limited form in November of 2005, and Headlights consequentially became an official member of the Polyvinyl Record Co. family.

2006 has been nothing if not a bright year so far. Headlights is currently wrapping up a monstrous 72-date tour and the band has released a split 7" with Ontario's Most Serene Republic (Arts & Crafts). Come August, the band's debut LP Kill Them With Kindness will bear its pretty face. The long-anticipated LP will shock even already-dedicated fans with its breadth and beauty, while newcomers have no choice but to fall in love: it's the power of pop music done perfectly, or at least perfectly enough to induce breathlessness; perhaps even the far-away look of being completely consumed, of jubilance. Kill Them With Kindness is a record huge and full and conclusive, a keystone installment in a developing watershed year. Expect more touring in support of the album, and the inevitable realization that Headlights is poised to be recognized as one of America's next top indie acts.

Anechoic "This is how it is" e-Card

1. Flickering
2. This Is How It Is
3. Coin Drop
4. Time and a Half
5. Say When
6. Tired Today
7. Big Ideas (demo)
8. Flickering (acoustic)
9. Just Like You (live from Shepherds Bush Empire)

Escucha los tracks en su e-Card.

As well as the six main album tracks the physical album features three extra tracks for your aural pleasure.

Big Ideas - an acoustic demo of a brand new song recorded in Rob\'s bedroom and far too good to be hidden away.

Flickering (Acoustic) - the acoustic version that got such a great reaction on our MySpace site.

Just Like You (Live At Shepherds Bush Empire) - we recorded this when we supported Embrace earlier this year. This is the full length version that has never previously been available apart from on live bootlegs and is mixed by our very own Andrew Lindsay.

You know when your co-worker or roommate is playing some song on a radio that wafts its way into your ear and you immediately perk up and say "Who is that??". Well, if your co-workers and roommates know their little known Silver Lake pop bands, it's probably Sea Wolf. Sea Wolf is the brand new buzz band from the Eagle Rock side of Los Angeles fronted by Alex Brown Church. Sea Wolf, a band of changing members constantly helmed by Church, is taking over Monday nights at Spaceland in Los Angeles. A residency series that has proved to propell the lucky few who get booked into bigger and better things.

The residency also celebrates the finishing of 9 new songs. These recordings were completed during the last 6 months in Seattle with the help one of indie rock's most gifted and prevalent producers Phil Ek (The Shins, Modest Mouse, Built to Spill, etc). Other contributions from the songs came from Dustin O’Halloran from Devics, Solon Bixler of Great Northern and several other LA musicians such as Scott McPherson, Patrick Park and Tanya Haden. -Filter-mag

Ashdowne

Andy Kempin (Lead Guitar ,Piano and Backing Voclas)
Ben Hepworth (Bass Guitar)
Craig Palmer (Drums and percussion)
Lee Wakeling (Lead Vocals and rhythm guitar)

Info de su MySpace:
In April 2001 Lee returned to the UK from 12 months of travelling. Whilst back packing across Australia his on going passion for music was inspired by a wealth of new experiences and people from all walks of life along the way Already a keen singer/songwriter, Lee was lucky enough to meet some like-minded musicians, which fuelled his ambition to form a band in his hometown on of Leicester on his return. Andy had been playing guitar on the local music scene since his school days but shifted from band to band. It was a frustrating experience trying to find a band without the egotistical bullshit. In my experience without the right songs a band is already flawed. My priority was to find another songwriter that would help create a spark. After several years of the same, Andy then answered an advert that Lee had posted in a local music store seeking a band. It was obvious from the start that there was chemistry between the two and they spent the next six months penning ideas that would later lead to songs such as Breathe Out and Flooodgates. They then spent a further six months jamming with numerous drummers and bass players. But it wasnt until late one Friday evening whilst drinking in a local bar, they got chatting to Craig who by chance happened to be a drummer looking to get back on the local gig scene. Craig spent his childhood drawing inspiration from his grandad who played drums himself in a local jazz band. Like wise Craig had also played in several bands around the midlands but couldnt settle. He was looking for a band that would allow him to be more inventive and develop his own unique style, which showed obvious influences of his family hero. Following several rehearsals at Andys parents house they decided it was time for a name. Ideas were thrown back and forth throughout the next few weeks until it was agreed that they would name the band after the house where they rehearsed, Ashdowne. A sound between the guys was now starting to develop and the band was becoming more apparent. The next two years would see Ashdowne gig the local circuit, build their own studio and start to record their first demos. However, it wasnt all plain sailing. Their studio burnt down in late 2004 and they struggled to find a bass player whose style would complete their dynamic sound. In 2005 Andy was approached by Ben, a bass player who was supporting Ashdowne in another band at a local city gig. He had watched the performance and felt he had the missing element the band needed to complete their dynamic sound. Ben first stumbled across a bass guitar after rummaging through his Aunts attic in his early teens. He immediately took to the instrument finding a natural ability for groove and creativity and soon after spent several years jamming and playing in numerous bands around the city. Although Ben was constantly playing he craved to develop his musical knowledge further and enrolled himself on a music technology course at Demontfort University in Leicester. The guys asked Ben to learn a couple of the songs and arranged to meet him at their studio the following week and see how the session progressed. It soon became obvious that Ben had brought a new sense of energy and dynamics to the band. Since completing the line-up the band continue to write and record demos and gig up and down the country. Some of these venues have included Liverpools The Cavern, The Manchester Metroplitan Theatre, The Halfmoon in Putney, Farringdons The Betsey Trotwood, The Charlotte in Leicester and numerous festivals such as Charnwood 2006. Ashdownes music is best described as a dynamic flow of guitar driven sounds, fused with distinctive melodies that create their epic sound which brand their identity. The band are currently working with producer Chris Sutton (Lucie Silvas, ,Amii Stewart, Marshal Jefferson and Richard Lobb) recording songs for their potential first album.

Sobre la banda en Download.com :
San Diego may spark an image of sandy, sunny beaches in your mind, but when the fog rolls in on winter nights, the salty air gets cold, forcing the city's eclectic group of people to bundle up or take refuge indoors. To the great fortune of music lovers, the January fog of 2005 pushed the founding members of The Clock Work Army inside. And in the living room of a small, beach town house, something unexpectedly astonishing was born.

Emily Neveu (vocals, guitar, piano) and Dave "Petti" Pettijohn (bass) never intended to form a band when they first began playing together, nor did they intend to make music for the masses. They simply played what they wanted to hear, expressing themselves through music in the warmth of their makeshift studio. These late night recording sessions brought in a wide range of musicians, each of them adding their own element to the music. One such musician was Scott Wheeler (lead guitar), a new San Diegan whom had just moved into the city from Minnesota. Although Wheeler's style leaned toward the weird and wonderful side of the folk genre, apparent in his own band Indian Moon, he added something special to the group. His musicianship was of the highest quality, a student of his own musical tastes, which was similar to Neveu and Petti. But more than anything, Wheeler added a feeling, some sort of emotion that complemented Neveu and Petti's sound in exactly the right way. And on that perfect note, The Clock Work Army officially became a band.

They continued to play and record their music, bringing in a drummer when they could find one or just relying on a synthetic beat, so long as they could play. In the midst of those improvised sessions, some rhythms would seamlessly match the melody. The band decided to add some structure, piecing together songs from the beautiful puzzle that was their music. At the end of that winter, with a few of these new tracks rehearsed, they performed for a large group of their friends in their makeshift studio. The condensation on the windows of that crowded living room blinded the rest of the world from something inspiring and captivating; so captivating that a small record label (Banter Records), of which the co-owners were in attendance, decided to sign the band, wiping away that condensation and introducing The Clock Work Army to the world.

One year later, the band and label's first issue, A Catalyst for Change EP, was released. The EP crosses a wide range of genres, from dance-punk to indie rock to shoegazing, leaving the listener at loss for words when attempting to define their sound. However, this is something the band prides itself on, a sound that can appease the musical palettes of a variety of listeners. They define their sound as undefined because they constantly progress as musicians and create music that is a direct reflection of their own abilities and emotions at the time of composition. Regardless of this undefinable sound, it is safe to define Neveu's voice as beautiful and one that could fit just as seamlessly in a jazz band as it does in this indie band. Petti's bass lines are steady and driving, providing the groundwork for Wheeler and Neveu's mind-blowing melodies. Together, these three musicians create a sound, atmosphere, and energy for those who adore beautiful and powerful music.

The future looks bright for The Clock Work Army, like the end of winter and the transition to spring. Their highly anticipated full-length is due out October 10, 2006.

Quietly intense and gently somber, Film School's Nyles Lannon hollows out a cozy, dark place to snuggle up to his captivating, intimate songs. He's also not afraid of supporting his guitar work with a little electronic action, but it all serves to tug those heart strings, even just a little bit.

Nyles Lannon is best known around San Francisco as guitarist and backup singer in the band
Film School. In Europe he is gaining popularity as the laptop musician N.Ln, after the release of his debut electronic record Astronomy for Children earlier this year (BBC Album of the Week, Jan 2004). Now Lannon stands poised to affect a whole new crop of fans with his intimate, dreamy style of acoustic electronic pop.

Cobra Starship "Snakes on a plane (bring it)"

Cobra Starship ? the new band helmed by Midtown singer Gabe Saportaand featuring members of The Academy Is?, Gym Class Heroes, and The Sounds is taking flight with the summer?s most talked-about flick. This track will be included on the soundtrack to the much-hyped movie that stars Samuel L. Jackson waging a war against... snakes on a plane, of course. Jackson makes a cameo in the video as does the singer from the rock band Fall Out Boy.

Info desde swinghouse:

When you call your band Under the Influence of Giants, you're expected to somehow be the sum of your roots, but this L.A. outfit defies easy categorization. As their self-titled debut Island Records album bears out, the Giants' funk-inflected, hook-saturated pop-soul is a combination of the Talking Heads' African poly-rhythmic groove ("Ah-Ha," "Got Nothing"), the ethereal falsettos of Michael Jackson and Prince ("Mama's Room"), the blue-eyed R&B of Hall & Oates and George Michael ("In the Clouds"), the insinuating melodic pop of Rubber Soul ("Stay Illogical"), Earth, Wind & Fire's horn-driven, noirish funk ("Against All Odds"), McCartney's winsome balladry ("Lay Me Down") and even the throbbing beat of post hip-hop by way of Madonna ("Meaningless Love").

We were really lucky to have cool parents who pointed us in the right
direction," says Aaron, who has been writing music together with Drew since they were teenagers. When Jamin, whose father is drummer Willie Wilcox of Hall and Oates and Utopia renown, joined two years ago, Under the Influence of Giants was born.

Audible

Indie / Pop

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States

Web
MySpace

Componentes:
Mary Garito, Mike Kennedy, Jim Kehoe, Kristine Muller, Steve Cawley.

Bio recogida en su web:
Audible began in early 2000 as the solo musical indulgence of Mike Kennedy. While toiling away behind the drumset for various well-known Philadelphia bands (Lefty's Deceiver, Mesmer), Mike began sketching out "songs" on a four track, using a borrowed sm57 and a five dollar guitar. Audible was the name he wrote on the tape cases, reason unknown. It had something to do with football.

After agreeing to fill a last minute opening slot at a local club (despite never having sung in public before), Mike implored his roommate and then-girlfriend Mary Garito to do the following things: help him finish the songs, sing backup, play the Casio sk-1 and egg shaker. She agreed. Their first show was opening for Bright Eyes.

It worked. Over the next year, Audible performed whenever Mike's other bands weren't, opening for Eltro, Mazarin, and Momus, among others. Mike's songs eventually outgrew the duo format, and hence his childhood friend Jim Kehoe joined as a second guitarist. Cool.

A year later Mike and Jim joined the emerging Philly band matt pond PA and went on tour for about two years, effectively putting Audible on hold. Oh, and then Mike and Mary broke up. None of this stopped the band. Whenever Mike wasn't playing drums with Matt Pond he was recording songs with Mary and Jim using ProTools and a borrowed ksm44. Some of these seminal recordings were released as "Opening Acts and Great Surprises," a split ep with songwriter Adam Arcuragi. More of these songs were released in October 2004 on "Sidetrack Stars," another split with good friends The Swivel Chairs.

In 2003, Mike and Jim parted ways with matt pond PA and turned their attention to Audible. Deciding it was time to become a full-fledged band, they added Lefty's Deceiver bassist (and Mike's now-girlfriend) Kris Muller to the lineup. Along with guest-star drummer Sean Byrne (Mazarin, Twin Atlas, BC Camplight), the group recorded its first proper full-length in apartments all over Philly and Brian McTear's Miner Street Studios. This disc will be released in early 2005.

The final piece of the puzzle was located in the short summer of 2004, when drummer Steve Cawley walked through the band's garage door and promptly played every song on the record note-for note. Also, he brought with a six-pack, and was awarded bonus points for this. His first show with the band was in July 2004, opening for matt pond PA. Small town.

Hems third studio album, Funnel Cloud, features songs of such carefully crafted, dream-like beauty that its almost impossible to place exactly where theyve come from or even in what era they might have been recorded. You can hear a subtle country twang, the storytelling simplicity of great folk music, a touch of Tin Pan Alley sophistication. They at times recall the emotionally stirring sweep of movie music from an age when the best pictures were shot in Cinemascope and orchestras crowded onto sound stages to perform the scores. These tunes are so immediately involving, sometimes so soothingly familiar, that youll insist you know them and love them already. Hem exists very much in the here and now, but always manages to evoke the timeless.

The seven-year old quartet vocalist Sally Ellyson, pianist Dan Messé, guitarists Gary Maurer and Steve Curtis hails from Brooklyn, New York. However, they conjure up such vivid, often pastoral settings and restless, lonesome characters in their songs, you may suspect that they long ago discovered some fantastic, secret portal in an old borough building that instantly transports them from their urban environs to a wide open prairie far, far away. Although Messé, Maurer and Curtis individually and jointly contribute material to Hems repertoire, their vision is remarkably unified. As Ellyson, who channels all their imagery, explains, Each song is its own world. They really show an amazing ability, that I dont think everyone has, to create a world in song after song that you can become so connected to, that brings you such deep feelings -- pain, joy, sorrow.

Funnel Cloud is Hems most lushly orchestrated work, yet its also the groups most pop-oriented effort. The immediate standout is Not California, a compelling tale of displaced lovers that was already featured earlier this year on NPRs All Songs Considered. Heart-tugging verses glide into an instantly memorable chorus, and it all builds to a gorgeous, string-laden finale. Too Late To Turn Back Now has an early-seventies country-rock feel; its background strings recall the brilliant charts that legendary arranger Paul Buckmaster created for Tumbleweed Connection-period Elton John. The Pills Stopped Working is a mid-album showstopper, a rollicking number featuring honky-tonk piano, wailing harmonica, gospel-like vocal harmonies from guest singers Amy Helm of Ollabelle and former Smashing Pumpkin James Iha, and a soaring horn section. Says Ellyson, Were experimenting and having fun and you can hear that on the record. -THE BOOTH-

Kanute is the result of the collaboration between Rob Overseer and singer/songwriter Rachael Gray. They first worked together on the track "Sparks" which appeared on the Overseer album "Wreckage" on the Columbia label. Following the success of Sparks, work began on a full album project under the name Kanute. The first release, a limited edition 7" vinyl, is now available to buy for £3+p&p@99p from kanute.net where you will also find more Kanute tracks and band info.

More...We're just finished our first 7" which is up on the site for listening and downloading and we have nearly finished out first album which is really exciting. John Garrison has been working on the project with some writing as well as playing which has been lovely - he is so easy to work with and I really enjoyed it.

This is Mando Diao. The band we started in Borlänge, Sweden. In the mid 90's my dear friend, the great Björn Dixgård, formed a band called Butler. They played the kind of music loads of small towns don't have, sweet pop, raving rock'n'rolland soul music that ment more than life itself. After a couple of months I met Björn on a big party in a park. We were too young to go to bars so we pretty much lived in different parks. Björn asked me to join and so I did. Bang! We changed name to Mando Diao. God knows where it comes from, probably heaven. After a year of rehearsing we found Samuel on drums and C-J on bass. It was very important to become a clan, a unit, something more than just friend playing music. Corleone-style. We didn't care much about getting signed by big labels. We knew that that day was gonna come. So we started building our own studio at our former organplayer Daniel Haglunds basement. When it was done we recorded demos after demos. This was year 2000 and the music scene was very dull at the moment. But in some way we felt that there was something going on. Our strategy was to play so many gigs that eventually everyone whoud know about us. And so in 2002 we signed with Emi. We didn't care who or what we signed with, we just knew that nothing could stop us. We released our demos as an album, called it Bring 'em in and toured the world. That's the history. Here's our page and present.

Lyrics for "Advice from Strangers"
I've been alive
I've been alone
Now You've come to take me home

What does it mean
To wear this ring?
I close my eyes, hold my breath
Then start to sing

'Dont turn around, or look away
What you know can never be erased
No-ones allowed to hold your hand
So one by one your memories are played when they can'

I put my song
To the air
I heard you say I'd find you there
On the wind
In the rain
It's been so long,
and I long to see you again

Monochromatic

Alternative / Rock

Orlando, Florida, United States

Monochromatic son:
Cole NeSmith (vocals, guitar)
Greg Perkins (guitar, keys, programming)
Dustin Tate (Drums, programming, keys)

Info en su MySpace:
Monochromatic began as a group of friends who have written and played together for several years. We wanted to take time to write quality songs that we felt good releasing on a large scale, says Cole NeSmith, frontman for the band.

During the last year, we've invested a ton of time, money and energy into writing for an album that has both artistic integrity and mass appeal. One of the things we hope for is not just success in music, but longevity as well.

Greg Perkins (guitar) and Cole NeSmith (vocals, guitar) have been friends for about eight years, and have spent most of that time playing music together. Dustin Tate (drums) joined the band about a year and a half ago, and has been instrumental in the formation of the new songs. Dustin is a big fan of music that has been influenced by technology (Imogen Heap, Postal Service), and those elements will definitely come through on our new record, says NeSmith.

One thing that might play a role in defining us is the variety in our influences. My two favorite artists are Miles Davis and Rufus Wainwright. There aren't any horns in our music, but the way Davis creates moods through his instrument has definitely been influential to me. Wainwright does some amazing things with melody and harmony... some of the best vocal arrangements I've ever heard, and I can only hope to reflect a portion of his ability.

Greg is a big fan of Sigur Ros and Radiohead... again, two bands whose biggest talent is using music to create moods. Greg likes things to be organic and is great at steering the band towards better artistry.

Overall, it's our desire to not just play music, but to go into any venue and create an environment using music. We want listeners to do more than listen. We want them to journey with us from one place to the next.

Componentes:

Maurits - Vocals
Bas - Lead Guitar
Vincent - Rhythm Guitar
Jeroen - Bass Guitar
Ilco - Drums

Sobre la banda -escrito en su MySpace-:
June 2003, GEM have their first gig ever, supporting The Libertines in front of a sold out venue in Amsterdam. The band is only together for a couple of months, the 40-minute setlist contains all the songs the band has, and drummer Ilco Slikker has been found in a local boozer only a few days before the gig, giving him time to practice with the band only twice (but he somehow never left the band again...). For The Libertines the gig is the beginning of the end, with singer Pete Doherty not showing up for one of the first times. For GEM however, it's the beginning of a true Rock'n'Roll Blitzkrieg through the Dutch music-scene.

This first sizzling energetic gig ensures the band straightaway of national press coverage, making them press darlings number 1 in the Dutch alternative media almost overnight. With the music GEM makes, a delicious cocktail of the best Rock'n'Roll gave us the last decades (Beatles, Stooges, Ramones, Buzzcocks, The Jam, Sex Pistols, The Smiths, Oasis) and the best of "hip-bands-of-nowadays" (Strokes, Libertines, Hives, Interpol) it offers the Dutch music-scene something that failed before. Namely, a young, hip, energetic Rock'n'Roll band, with a firm belief in their own capabilities, ready to take on anyone and anything that comes in their way. Not forgetting their ability to write songs you will find yourself waking up to, singing in the bathroom, or thinking of while having hot sex. Yes, it WILL hunt you for days, and days, and days... Typically the type of band that will make lots of kids pick up a guitar and start a band of their own.

Before the year 2003 comes to an end GEM clinch a record-deal with the prestigious Excelsior Recordings (Daryll Ann, Zzz and Johan). The debut-album - Tell Me What's New- is released on the 24 th of May 2004. Reviews of the album , by traditional and new media alike, are raving. The tour that follows takes the band to famous clubs like Paradiso, Melkweg, Tivoli, 013 and Vera, and big festivals like Lowlands, Metropolis, Noorderslag/Eurosonic and The Music In My Head.

In 2005 the band focuses mainly on touring Germany and recording their second album, which is due for release at the beginning of 2006. In June 2005 the band plays all over Germany for some weeks, and the response is amazing, getting once again rave reviews of the gigs as well as of the debut-album. This ensures the GEM-tour-van to cross the Dutch-German border frequently throughout the rest of the year. Their latest single Good To Know You (taken from their forthcoming album 'Escapades') was released as a single and swiftly enters the higher regions of the Dutch national charts, which leads to GEM being invited by Top Of The Pops to come over and play the single.

Where does it end? Who knows? Who cares? It's only Rock'n'Roll, and GEM likes it!

The Postmarks

sábado, septiembre 02, 2006

Indie / Pop / Classical

Miami, Florida, United States

Componentes: Tim - Jon - Christopher

Info recogida en su MySpace:

For The Postmarks, stepping outside of their private, music making world is a brand new experience. Describing the environment where their songs and recordings have been carefully crafted as a "heartbreak factory", the band has decided to open up the doors and allow the world in for the first time. It is an act that reveals the journey the members took from the creative mire of emptiness to the overflowing well of heartbreak. A journey that helped them emerge at the forefront of the nouveau pop movement.

The Postmarks' approach focuses on classic song writing and features the blissful vocals of chanteuse Tim Yehezkely, who drew the music from a production of melancholy to the solace of a broken heart on the mend, where it discovered a place of sunny amnesty. All these facets have come together to create a sound that has been described as "a suburban bedroom symphony suffused with post-teenage heartbreak and painstaking pointillism." by The New Times Broward/Palm Beach.

In 2005 The Postmarks caught the ear of famed producer Andy Chase (Ivy, Tahiti 80, Brookville) who agreed to mix their full-length studio recording for release on his own Unfiltered Records label. With their symphony finally making it out of the bedroom, The Postmarks will introduce themselves to the world through their self-titled debut album, an expression of pure pop longing fueled by a driving rhythm section and lush strings, a trademark of The Postmarks' songwriting and meticulous production. The first single Goodbye opens the record with a firm farewell to the past and a welcome to the future. Each song is a step toward an understanding of love's persistent call.

With nods to French pop and Brian Wilson's orchestral arrangements, The Postmarks believe they can rekindle the love affair people once had for beautiful music and well-crafted songs about the trials and tribulations of life. Christopher Moll and Jonathan Wilkins combined their love of the elegant and dreamy soundtracks of John Barry, the soothing and sophisticated sounds of Burt Bacharach and the passionate and poetic nature of The Smiths. Molls career, starting with his previous bands See Venus (March) and timewellspent (Parasol) served him well, while the varied musical talents of Wilkins, a longtime collaborator with Moll, gave a life and a sound to his personal compositions. Above this floats the softly sweet voice of Tim Yehezkely, a conspiratorial whisper that winds through each song. Her early experiments with tape recording and a love for the comforting hiss of lo-fi adventures made The Postmarks an even more personal endeavor. This perfect combination of innocence and purpose gives one the feeling that autumn is just around the corner, as a new chapter is beginning in their lives.

"a suburban bedroom symphony suffused with post-teenage heartbreak and painstaking pointillism... some of the most complex and sophisticated pop music around, a self-contained, hermetically pure world of orchestrated, swooningly cinematic lusciousness." New Times - September 22, 2005

"The Rescue"(2005)
Recorded in Austin, Texas (at Michael's house) January 2005
Released in October 2005 (part of the TRL Travels In Constants subscription series...subscriptions are all sold out and this record isn't in stores, but we will be selling them at shows for the next couple of years)
We promised Jeremy we would do a Travels in Constants e.p. literally over four years ago. Since then we've been sidetracked by an astonishing number of things. Two thousand and five was our year to take a bit of a step back and take some time to write new music, and along the way somewhere we got an idea for doing this e.p. in a different way then we've ever approached writing music. It can take us months and months and months to write even a song. Sometimes it comes much quicker, but often we spend many an afternoon trying out new melodies and riffs and drum beats, playing things over and over, obsessing and arguing and sighing and sitting silently for what seems to be hours on end. So, for this, our idea was to write and record a song every day for two weeks (this later became eight days) and the rest of the two weeks would be spent trying to mix and master the results. No riffs were to be written beforehand; things would be pretty much made up on the spot. It seemed daunting but fun and, perhaps, instructive. A learning experience. A chance to try new instruments and new ways of thinking about writing songs. Its also our first attempt at recording ourselves (the whole thing was recorded in Michael's house). Anyway, The Rescue is the result.

Sobre ellos en su MySpace:
Fancy description...

Atlanta's SNOWDEN drowns their brand of melodies in a sea of reverb heavy distortion and hypnotic layers. Anti-Anti (JT1115), the band's debut album for Jade Tree, integrates the ethereal guitar resonance and dynamic percussion reminiscent of bands like RIDE and early CURE, with the volatility of contemporaries such as THE YEAH YEAH YEAHS. Combining a mix of tracks recorded by Erik Wofford (My Morning Jacket, Explosions in the Sky, The Black Angels) at Cacophony Recorders in Austin with tracks recorded and mixed by principal songwriter Jordan Jeffares, Anti-Anti finds Jeffares and company elevating their trademark sound into an unpredictable mix of dirty pop soundscapes. If post-shoegaze exists as a genre, then SNOWDEN is proving their contention for the upper ranks.
